Eighteen-year-old Oliver Johnston remembered by loved ones following skiing death

A teenage boy from Sydney’s north who died in a tragic skiing accident has been remembered as “kind” and “generous” by loved ones.

Oliver Johnston, 18, hit a spur while attempting the High Noon run – one of the highest and steepest ski slopes in the country – at Thredbo ski resort on Sunday.

This caused the Killara teen to lose control and crash into trees.

He died from his injuries soon afterwards after being taken to a nearby medical centre.

Mr Johnston had left his group of friends to tackle the dangerous slope on his own.

Loved ones have since said it was a “privilege knowing and loving” him following his untimely death.

“Oli, we love you forever, thank you for your kindness, love, generosity and your wonderful mind,” a relative posted on Instagram.

“Our lives have changed forever. It was a privilege knowing and loving you. You were the best of us.”

Monaro police Inspector Keith Price said no one saw what happened as police continue to investigate the incident.

“He had been skiing with a group of friends and had just left them so that he could go off on his own and tackle a different height when he hit a spur in the ground and lost control. It threw him off balance and he veered into the trees,” he said.

“He suffered significant injuries. No witnesses saw what happened.”

He had only graduated from the North Sydney private school last year.

“It is with deep sadness that I write to advise you of an accident that has resulted in the tragic death of Old Boy Oliver Johnston,” he said.

“The school is supporting the family during this difficult time. We are mindful of the network of students, Old Boys and parents who may be impacted directly or indirectly by this tragedy.”

Mr Johnston’s younger brother is still at the school in year 11, with counselling offered to all students.
